Orniflox® is an antibiotic registered for use in pet rabbits, rodents, ornamental birds and reptiles
It contains 25 milligrams of enrofloxacin per millilitre. Enrofloxacin is a (fluoro)quinolone antibiotic .
Enrofloxacin has an action against both Gram-negative as Gram-positive bacteria. Also iwith intracellular bacteria, like Mycoplasma, enrofloxacin can be used, because fluoroquinolones can penetrate cells.
Orniflox® can be used for infections of the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract caused by enrofloxacin susceptible strains of bacteria.
These include Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella spp, Bordetella spp., Proteus spp., Pseudomonas spp, Staphylococcus spp. and Mycoplasma spp.
All these bacteria are known to be frequent causative organism for infections of rabbits, rodents, birds and reptiles.
The condition most commonly encountered in rabbits is 'snuffles'. This is an inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. If not treated effectively, this may develop into a chronic condition.
In birds there are also known conditions caused by bacteria. In pigeons one of the most common example is infection with Salmonella, it is also called Paratyphus. In parrots and parakeets, parrot fever/Psittacosis is a well-known example.
A proper diagnosis is very important in birds especially. Often the primary pathogen is not a bacterium, but a fungal organism. If a bird, affected by a fungus, is treated with an antibiotic agent, its condition can deteriorate because this may promote the growth of the fungus.
Orniflox® is a prescription-only medicine, and as such, may only be provided by a veterinarian. He or she has to decide whether or not Orniflox® is the appropriate medicine for your pet.
